Well have had a busy couple of weeks since we started back in the new year and we have lots to write about.

We are continuing with our Scotland topic and we have been doing a great job at learning about different places in Scotland and where they are on the map.  Rebecca wanted to tell you that we used clay to make the Loch Ness Monster and now that we have painted them green, we will be displaying them in the loch in our classroom!  Hannah brought in a Lion Rampant flag today that her grandpa gave to her and she very kindly said that we could display it in our classroom until the end of our topic.

This morning some of the children in our class took part in a poetry competition for our Burns assembly on Friday.  Mrs McBeth was very very proud of every single one of us, as we managed to learn a very difficult poem.  Some of the children decided that they would like to perform their poem on the stage and Mrs McBeth had to choose names out of a hat because we were all too good and she couldn’t make a decision!  Anya, Hannah and Abbie performed today and they were all excellent.  The judges had a tough choice to make, but Abbie was our winner and she will be reciting her poem on Friday.  Well done Abbie!

This afternoon we had a Burns supper and all got to taste haggis, neeps and tatties along with a cup of Irn Bru and a little bit of shortbread.  We sang some scottish songs and had the chance to do some highland dancing!

Jack wanted to let you know that we are now enjoying football on a Tuesday morning for the next six weeks.  We all had a fantastic time last week and played a fun game called ‘Surfers and Crabs’ and we were learning how to dribble the ball.  Some of the children from each class are also taking part in an after school football club with Mrs McBeth.  She has already spotted some future Scotland players!

In language this week we have started some spelling.  We are doing really well!  We are studying each word, covering the word, writing the word and checking the word.  We are using these words to help us when writing fantastic stories.

We have also been reading from non-fiction books and the children had some facts that they would like to share with you:

Emily – ‘A baby tiger is called a cub’.

Nathan – ‘A caterpillar has hooks to help it climb’.

Caoimhe – ‘A farmer gathers eggs from its hens and then sells them at the Farmers Market’.

As you can see, we are very busy at the moment and we had a well deserved day off on Tuesday!

Thank you for reading our blog and please feel free to leave a comment.  We all love hearing from you.

Happy new year from everyone in primary 2b!

We all had a great time during our Christmas holidays but we are very happy to be back at school and we are all ready to work really hard and learn lots of new things.

This week we started our new topic which is going to be all about Scotland.  Mrs McBeth asked us what sort of things we would like to learn about Scotland and here are some of our responses:

*  The Loch Ness Monster

*  famous Scottish people/sports people

*  Scottish food and drink

*  places in Scotland

*  Robert Burns  and

*  Irn Bru!

We will all be trying our best to find out lots of new things.

On the 27th January our whole school will be taking part in a Burns Assembly and one person from each class will be reciting a Robert Burns poem, which I am sure you have heard about at home.

Kieran wanted to tell you that this week we did some Co-operative Learning.  We all worked in groups of 4 to create a Scottish scenery collage.  Each person in the group had an important job to do such as group manager, resources manager, tidier and timekeeper and we were all very responsible.

Scott also wanted to tell you about some of the songs that we have started to learn.  We learned, ‘You cannae shuv yer granny aff a bus’ and the start of the Scottish national anthem, but our favourite is ‘Donald where’s your troosers’.

Over the next few weeks we will be learning lots more and you can help us by telling us what you know about Scotland!

For the beginning of term 3 we will be looking at non-fiction reading books before moving back onto fiction.  Hannah says we should let you know that our books are getting a little bit harder, but we are doing very well.

It has been a very good first week back and it feels like we have never been away!

We hope that you have enjoyed our first blog of 2012.

Thank you for reading.

Changes and Christmas

We have been having Mrs McBeth as our only teacher for over two weeks now.  We have still seen Mrs Gibson lots though.

We really enjoyed singing and acting to all of our families at the nativity

yesterday.  We hope you enjoyed it too.  Someone is very busy making

a DVD for the nativity, and the pantomime!

We also had our party yesterday afternoon.  Santa visited and gave us

all a present which was very kind. The boys got lego creator and the grils got colouring in sets.  We had juice, biscuits and crisps and did lots of games and activities like pass the parcel, Grand Old Duke of York and

four corners game.

In class we made calendars for our mums and dads or grans.  We

have finished learning about fairytales and hope you all enjoyed comign

in to see us on our open day.

We have been learning something new in language.  We have been

learning about verbs.  Verbs are doing words.  Some verbs are:

skipping, running, writing, climbing, playing, learning, cycling,

riding, reading and jogging.

We are still learning more about the number 0-100.  We have been

learning how to count in 10′s.

We have been reading the fairytale Snow White and the 7 dwarves adn we made a mirror for the class and drew our own faces and made them

into a collage by using different materials.

We did our assembly on keeping safe on Friday.  Thank very much to all our families who came to watch.  We did very well and Mrs Gibson, Mrs MacBeth and Mrs Ferguson are very proud of us.

It is Mrs Gibson’s last day with us for a while because she is going to be

be acting depute head just now.  We will be getting Mrs Macbeth all week.

We have been doing lots of things to do with our

Fairyland topic.   We fixed Rapunzel’s tower in our

classroom and now she is at the top of the tower again.

We are learning about Jack and the Beanstalk and we

now have a big beanstalk in the open area and a huge, large

giant too!  Our house in the open area is now a castle

for us to play in!

Today we have been finding out which words from our

fairytales are nouns like: Rapunzel, the wolf, dragon, fairy,

Granny and castle.  A noun is the name of something and

you can take a picture of it.

In maths we went out to the open area and tried to build a

castle out of the building bricks. We also have been doing

measurement and we measured Mrs Ferguson.  We have been

using non-standard units to measure which are things

like our hands, or making big giant’s footsteps.  We made

Mrs Ferguson into the mum from Jack and the

Beanstalk.  We think Mrs Ferguson was a litle worried

about that job!

We want to remind you that our Primary 2 assembly is

is at 2.15pm next Friday, 25th November and we will

be telling everyone how to keep themselves safe!

We have been looking forward to building Fairyland, we are very excited because all of the infant classes are going to build Fairyland in the open area.

We are building Fairyland because one day a friendly dragon sent us a letter and it told us that Fairyland with the dragon’s castle and Jack’s beanstalk and all the other things from fairytales are disapearing and we need to help rebuild it in our open area.

We had to write a letter to Miss Currie to ask if we could do this and she sent us back a lovely letter with fairytale pictures on it saying we could do it!

When the dragon came some of us thought we saw it and felt warm breath on our faces!

We have also to read lots of fairytales – so far we have read Jack and the Beanstalk, the Princess and the Pea and the Dragon and the Princess. Some of us have started to have fairytales as our reading books. Mums and dads could help by reading fairytales to us at home.

Watch out for more exciting news about Fairyland!

Fast start back

Primary 2b are back at school and ready to learn after their holiday.

Jack wanted to write that we have a new Jolly Phonics sound which is “old”. Some words which have this sound are: gold, sold, cold, bold, fold, told, older and old.

We have continued to learn about Fairtrade because we are all taking part in an assembly about it on Friday – which mums and dads can come too. We understand that if we buy Fairtrade the farmers who are growing those foods will get a fair price.

With Primary 2a the other day we carried on with some science lessons about water and ice to do with our safety topic. We learned that when water turns into ice it gets bigger and wider.

We had a special treat this morning when some people put on a show. We learned how we can use the sun, wind and steam instead of fuel to make electricity. We should also be making sure we turn off lights and tv’s, try to walk more and use bikes. Zaak was very clever and could tell everyone what a solar panel was.

Mrs Gibson is away to Malawi during the holiday to see her old link school and to try to find a link school for us to be friends with.  Lots of classes in the school have been making things for her to take either to help us make friends with pupils over there, introduce ourselves or show them a bit about Scotland.

With Mrs Gibson we made a number line to 20 and some tick/cross cards for answering questions and with Mrs McBeth we made up a story about the Gruffalo!  Mrs Ferguson and Mrs Milne have been laminating everything for us so that it does not get dirty out there.

Mrs Gibson gave a talk to the school a little while ago and showed us lots of photos from Malawi, it was really interesting.

We have no homework tonight as it is a house day tomorrow so we will not be in our own class all day.  It is about fairtrade.  We have to try and bring in packages that have the fairtrade label on them for our school display.

We are very pleased that we brought in the most tins for Harvest – 103 of them, and the school altogether brought in more than 700!

Mrs Gibson and Mrs McBeth wish everyone a happy holiday!  Check out the photos of our Malawi below.

Exciting week

We have been doing lots of things this week – especially today which was very exciting!  We have lots of photos to show you of these activities.  Mrs Gibson says it takes a long time to put the photos up individually on the blog so she has put them on a slideshow on Flikr which you can see below!  We are being as safe as we can online so there are no photos of us, just what we have been doing and some of our work.

In this slideshow is some of our phonics work, news writing, fire visit and our safety walk which was very exciting. We were walking along the canal to think about water safety and saw boat coming through so we got to see exactly how the locks work as it got taken through.  It was very exciting.  We also looked out for things on our walk that we needed to be careful of…and that showed us we need to pay attention even on the pavement when we are walking along.

Thank you

Hello from Primary 2 again! Thank you to all the mums and dads who have looked on the blog and left comments already.

We are excited about telling you all of the things we have been doing and Mrs Gibson has been taking photos of some of our work to put up soon.

This last week we have been learning:

how to do subtraction in maths. We have to remember to take away and not add on when we see this sign -!
for our topic on Safety we have been learning what to do if we have to phone 999. This was another reason why it’s good to know our address! We were in the house corner looking after a baby and Mrs Ferguson was helping us to pretend that something had happened to the baby and we had to phone 999.
In pairs we have been making posters to tell other people what to do if they have to phone 999.
In language we have been doing writing. We are still practising what makes a good sentences, our numbers and writing our full names.

We had our photographs taken yesterday and will be bringing them home today. For homework tonight we wrote that we are to practise adding to 10 – this is mentally with our mums and dads. And we are to try and remember to bring a tin for harvest!
